Founded in 1935 as the Stalingrad Medical Institute, Volgograd State Medical University has since gained Academy status in 1993 and University status in 2003. The University is actively involved in numerous international projects aimed at promoting medical research and clinical practice, which has led to a genuine interest in its activities by government officials from various countries. Recently, ambassadors from the USA, Malaysia, India, the People's Republic of China, Brunei, Bangladesh, and other top officials from different countries' Medical and Dental Councils have visited the University. Volgograd Medical University has established partnerships with various foreign universities that offer MBBS education, including the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (USA), Albert Ludwigs Universitaet (Freiburg, Germany), Martin-Luther Halle-Wittenberg Universitaet (Germany), Belgian, French, Chinese universities, and more. The University collaborates with the World Federation for Medical Education, WHO, UNESCO, British Council, United States Agency for International Development, and American International Health Alliance, and participates in a wide range of joint international research projects.

In the present day, the university in the Russian Federation is highly regarded among medical schools, with many of its scientists being world-renowned for their contributions to the theory and practice of medicine. Since 1962, the university has been providing education to international students, including those from India. Students from 113 countries across the former Soviet Union, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa have studied at the university. Over the years, the university has trained 3000 physicians, dentists, pediatricians, and pharmacists from foreign countries. Since 2000, the university has been able to teach foreign students in English.
